The historic core of this picturesque town with approximately 21,000 inhabitants has been a part of the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1995, along with the St. Barbara’s Church and the Church of the Assumption of Our Lady and Saint John the Baptist.
Silver Fever!
Owing to silver mining, which probably was being conducted on the surface of the area, it was one of the most important Czech royal cities in the Middle Ages. In the 1370s, a literal silver fever broke out here, and thousands of people moved to the settlement at that time, not only from near and far regions but even from German ones! At the end of the 13th century, one-third of European silver production came from here. In 1300, King Wenceslas II issued the law Ius regale montanorum, or the Royal Mining Law, which established royal rights over silver mining and minting. In the same year, he also introduced the single coin, the Prague groschen, and concentrated its minting in Kutná Hora. In 1318, Kutná Hora acquired the status of a town.
Kutat? Kutna? Kutta!
It will probably occur to everyone, quite logically, that the name of this city is derived from the fact that silver was mined, that is, rolled (kutat) here. Yes, this is one of the 3 interpretations of the name’s origin. The second frequently quoted version is based on the story of the Sedlec monk Antonín. They say that while resting in a field near the Sedlec Ossuary, three silver rods appeared in his dream, and in order not to forget the place where the rods were supposed to be, he marked it with his cowl (kutna) and ran to the monastery to tell his monks about his vision. However, the truth is much more prosaic... Most of the original population was German until the beginning of the 15th century, so the name comes from the Central German term Kutta, or pit, or hole, and Hora was then a common name for a place where mining took place.
This ossuary is made of bones and skulls of 40-70,000 people who died from the plague. It was created by František Rint, a local woodcarver, in 1870. This Roman Catholic chapel is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995 and it is one of the most visited sights in the country.

The Kutná Hora branch of Zmrzlinárna (Ice cream parlour) is one of three shops owned by a couple of friends, Kateřina Willmann and Lucie Radoňová.
Here, in Nymburk and in Braník in Prague, they offer homemade artisan ice cream in classic and unusual flavours. In addition to creamy flavours made from mascarpone and quality milk, they also have 6 vegan sorbets and 4 novel specials daily.

This late Gothic burgher house is now part of the Czech Museum of Silver, which has placed here part of its collection and two exhibitions: The Royal Upper Town - bourgeois culture and life in the 17th-19th centuries and Lapidarium: the Art of Stonemasons of Medieval Kutná Hora.\r\n

The intensive silver mining in the town resulted in the disruption of the underground springs, so Kutná Hora had constant problems with the availability of drinking water for its population. Therefore, in 1495 the town decided to build a twelve-sided stone fountain, originally roofed, to serve as a reservoir of drinking water. The water, incidentally, was fed into it through a 2.5 km long wooden pipe from the St. Vojtěch spring, which was located near the village of Bylany.
The fountain served in this way until 1890.

Few realize that the ossuary is part of what’s officially called the Church of All Saints. Originally tied to a local Cistercian monastery, this site became hallowed ground when Abbot Heidenreich scattered earth from the Holy Sepulchre over the cemetery. This sanctified soil attracted burials from far and wide, including 30,000 plague victims and 10,000 casualties from the Hussite wars.
Overcrowding in the cemetery led to the ossuary’s creation, spurred by its sanctified status and the influx of plague and war dead. A woodcarver named František Rint was commissioned by the Schwarzenberg family in 1870 to organize the skeletal remains into what can only be described as macabre artwork. His masterpieces include a chandelier made from nearly every bone in the human body and a family crest of the Schwarzenbergs.

Thanks to the generosity of the coiners and pregerers from the neighbouring Italian Court, the construction of this church, which was originally dedicated to St. Anne, could begin in the 1430s. Although the church was not completed until 1420, the first mass was celebrated here in 1356.\r\n
Between 1424 and 1648 the Utraquists were active in the church and the church changed its patron saint, which has remained until today. Saint James thus replaced Saint Anne.

The history of the town itself dates back to the 13th century, and its origins are linked to the tradition of silver mines in the area, which dates back to the 10th century. The wealth brought by mining enabled a vast building harvest, which for example gave rise to one of the most important medieval monuments - the Church of St. Barbara.
The decline came during the Hussite wars when the town was attacked several times and the population fought numerous national and religious quarrels. In 1424, Jan Žižka had the town thoroughly burnt down and the new inhabitants became the Tabor people. The town only began to rebuild under King George of Poděbrady and then with the support of Vladislav II. Jagellonsky, who was elected king here. At the end of the 15th century, the town was already rivaling Prague in importance, but the following century brought the end of the minting of the Prague groschen due to the import of cheap silver from Spanish-dominated South America, which led to a decline in mine yields and lower profitability of mining.
Kutná Hora played an important role in the Czech national revival. The archaeologist Jan Erazim Vocel or the playwright Josef Kajetán Tyl were born here, and Karel Havlíček Borovský lived and worked here. During the First Republic, Kutná Hora was a rather sleepy town, but it was still a town of sights and sightseers with a high cultural level. It was during this period that the parts of the town immediately adjacent to the historic core were undergoing construction activities that still define their character today. For example, the modern Dvořák's Monument to the Fallen in front of the Hrádek, the Kroh Houses, Machoň's District Office and Podzemný's tenement house were created. These buildings have shown that Kutná Hora can be further developed in a way that does not affect its historical parts and that modern buildings give the city a dignified framework.

If you like to walk like me and don't have any serious mobility problems, you can walk the whole route. In case you don't want to walk from Sedlec, you can use the local bus or taxi. And connect at any point in the centre of Kutná Hora.
The duration is only an estimate and does not include visits of the interiors, which are definitely worth visiting.
Similarly, the length of the route is measured from the first point to the last. (If you decide to take a taxi from Sedlec to Kutná Hora, for example, you will shorten it by 2 km.)
I have also chosen two gastronomically oriented places - V Ruthardce and Zmrzlinárna, with which I have had good experiences.
